We would like to display eplises (“,,,”) when a cell is clipping the content.  Can we override behavior at cell render\draw time to do this?

You can even create your own editor (eXcell – extended cell editor) which will behave exactly as you like. For more details about extending of exiting editors or creating new, please refer to the documentation: http://www.scbr.com/docs/products/dhtmlxGrid/doc/guide.html#excell_add">http://www.scbr.com/docs/products/dhtmlxGrid/doc/guide.html#excell_add
To change the way cell displays its content, you’ll need to override setValue method (depending on changes you’ll also may need to edit getValue method then)
