Can a column be sorted on the ToolTip instead of the actual value?

I am building a table that will contain a keyword and letter, visible in the column, but needs to be sorted in a different order (in other words, the keywords in alphabetical order aren't in order of importance). I could use the tooltip to store the importance indicator/value if there's a way to sort on that value. Or, do you have any other suggestions/recommendations (perhaps point me to a custom sort scheme)?
